Getting here

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is about 50 km from Arusha, roughly an hour by road. Book your airport transfer before you land.

02

Money

The currency is the Tanzanian shilling (TZS). Hotels and tours often take US dollars, but markets, taxis and small shops prefer shillings. Mobile money such as M-Pesa is used everywhere.

03

Visa

Most visitors need a visa. Check the rules for your passport and apply through Tanzania's official e-visa website before you fly.

04

SIM card and data

Buy a local SIM at the airport or in town. Bring your passport, because every SIM card has to be registered. Data bundles are affordable.

05

Weather

Arusha is mild year-round. The long rains usually fall March to May and the short rains around November. June to October is the drier season, with cool evenings, so pack a light jacket.

A few Swahili words

Karibu means welcome, Asante thank you, Habari? how are you, and Bei gani? how much. People love it when you try.
